10 First Dance Song Ideas – Uncommon, Classic, and Fun

January 10, 2024

Choosing a first dance song is actually a big decision that doesn’t feel big until it’s time to nail it down! It typically speaks of your love, your personalities, and your feelings towards one another. It’s the song you forever get to remember as “your song” when you hear it in the future. You’ll dance to it again when you celebrate anniversaries and always hold it special in your heart.

Let me first start by saying that if you have any song that is meaningful to you guys from any point in your relationship, that is ALWAYS my vote. Maybe it’s the first song you danced to together when you started dating, the song that was playing on the radio during one of your favorite memories, or a song one of you sent to each other that made you think of them. Sentimental songs > everything!

But, if there’s not a song like that for you (don’t worry I didn’t have one like that in mind either), here are ten ideas I love that fall into the classic love songs category that I actually don’t see used often, more contemporary songs that I haven’t seen used much (if any), and just fun celebratory choices.

At Last – Etta James – Okay this one is just CLASSIC in every way. I feel like you feel in love just listening to it even if you aren’t in a relationship lol! Timeless, SO romantic, and the perfect slow dance. Was probably used more a while back but I haven’t seen it in the past few years. Cannot go wrong with this one!

Let’s Stay Together – Al Green – Another big classic one that I wish I heard more. I love a good R&B/soul love song and this one is so fun!

Beyond – Leon Bridges – If you haven’t heard of Leon Bridges, you are missing out! All of his music is fabulous. Beyond is the perfect love song for a sweet slow dance. BONUS: If you are a Luke Combs fan, he has a version featuring him that I love too!

You Are So Beautiful – Joe Cocker – I mean come on, is this not the perfect song to dedicate to your bride? And even more perfect to declare these lyrics on your big day as your family and friends watch in adoration for how much you love her.

Made for You – Jake Owen – For my country music lovers, this song is just TOO sweet. Love me some Jake Owen and this song just makes me want to squeeze my husband and reflect on our younger years.

Dancing – Elevation Worship (feat. Joe Barnes and Tiffany Hudson) – If you love Christian music, you’ve definitely heard plenty of Elevation Worship. The first time I heard this song I immediately thought of a first dance and how well it would fit. A good one for sure!

Yours (Wedding Version) – Russell Dickerson – Okay I may be a little bias because this was my first dance song, but it’s just perfect. The moment I heard it it spoke to me. A song of love, gratitude, and sweet completeness.

The Way You Look Tonight – Frank Sinatra – Okay back to the classics! How can you not love Frank Sinatra? Romance x 100. Upbeat, flirty, puts a smile on your face, and makes you want to dance.

Better Together – Jack Johnson – This acoustic gem just feels light and effortless, like your love feels on your wedding day. Jack Johnson has lots of great songs and this fun one is a fabulous choice.

L-O-V-E – Nat King Cole – Last but certainly not least! I always think of The Parent Trap when I hear this one, anyone else? I LOVE this song and never hear it used these days. Would be a great one to get a choreagraphed dance created for to really wow your guests!

What do you guys think? What are some classic or uncommon songs you love that would make a perfect first dance song? Comment below!
